Geology

Begin With A Solid Foundation

Hard facts are the foundation of any plan, in any business. An accurate geological assessment is critical to successful resource development and must consider economic conditions, market trends and political considerations as well as the physical characteristics of the resource. Our exploration and resource assessment programs take all these factors into account, resulting in strategies that meet our clients’ needs with scientifically sound analyses and an impartial perspective.

First, we select from our broad resource pool of geologists, engineers, hydrologists, geotechnical experts, and technical specialists to assemble a team specifically suited to your particular project. Our geologists are experts at planning, managing, and executing drilling and site data collection programs designed to meet our client’s objectives.  We then employ leading-edge technology such as three-dimensional geological modeling, mine planning, and reservoir engineering software to manage and analyze the collected data for maximum utilization and value. Throughout the course of a project, we ensure that quality control and data custody remain top priorities

Norwest’s combination of experience, technology and best practices results in accurate and reliable resource assessments that can advance your project from initial financing through final development.

Our geological services include exploration and assessment of most energy and mineral commodities for companies of all sizes, all over the world. Our internationally-based team of experts have real-world experience in:

  • Underground and Surface Coal Mines
  • Coalbed Methane (CBM)
  • Oil Sands
  • Conventional Oil and Gas
  • Oil Shale
  • Heavy Oil Base Metals
  • Tight Gas Sands
  • Industrial Minerals
  • Precious Metals

Case Study: Geology

Exploration, Resource Delineation, and Coal Mine Development Omnogovi Aimag, Mongolia

Situation: Norwest assessed the potential of coal occurrences for a Canadian exploration and mining company holding mineral exploration licenses in the South Gobi desert of Mongolia. Norwest’s efforts were focused on the evaluation of licenses to determine the feasibility of developing the coal resources within the license areas for export to the resources to support the Chinese thermal and metallurgical coal markets.

Solution: Norwest mobilized to the South Gobi desert to conduct an initial site review. A multi-faceted exploration plan was developed which consisted of field reconnaissance, photo geologic and satellite imagery, exploratory trenching, surface geophysics, and exploratory drilling.

Result: Norwest located and defined significant coal deposits of high quality thermal coal with potential for metallurgical applications. Continued exploration has increased the reportable resource base to nearly 150 million tonnes as of July, 2007. Geotechnical and hydrologic studies were conducted to support the development of a prefeasibility mining study. The project is on track for initial mine production in 2008.
