General Position Description:

This position would focus on Coal Seam (or Bed) Methane (CSM/CBM) exploration and development work and could require international travel, primarily to Australia.  Work will likely ential spending up to 20% of time in the field to supervise daylight operations. Specific duties and assignments will include office and field work for the first several years as well as participation in various technical field studies and field support projects.

Drilling Engineer, Golden, CO

General Position Description:

This position would focus on Coal Seam (or Bed) Methane (CSM/CBM) exploration and development work.  Work would ential relocating to Australia for at least one year.  Position will require spending some time in the field (10%-20%) to supervise daylight operations. Geological Engineer, Grand Junction, CO or Charleston, WV

Job Duties: 

Multi-commodity resource exploration and evaluation with an emphasis on international and domestic coal mining projects. Work will entail the design and implementation of exploration programs, development of resource models and compilation of resource reports.
The implementation of exploration programs include the sourcing of appropriate protocols and contractors for exploration permitting, remote sensing, drilling, sampling, assays, washability testing, bulk sampling and surveying. Information received from exploration programs is to be processed and evaluated following selection of suitable resource modeling software. The resource models are to meet or exceed international standards for the reporting of resources and reserves.

Specific duties and job assignments will include consultancy relating to the following:

  • Supervision of coal exploration drilling programs
  • Geologic computer modeling
  • Resource and reserve analysis
  • Geotechnical core logging
  • Geotechnical assessment of rock competency relating to mine stability issues
  • Business development activities supporting our current work assignments in Mongolia
  • Translation of Russian and Mongolia geologic reports
  • Geologic and technical support of our on going exploration assignments in Mongolia.

Education Required:

Bachelors in Geological Engineering or closely related field. Will accept foreign equivalent degree.

Experience Required: 

Four years post university experience as a geologist or geological engineer in coal exploration or mining.

Special Requirements:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the work processes involved in coal exploration and evaluation. Demonstrable ability to supervise a project from exploration to mining operation. Requires demonstrable ability to conduct field reconnaissance activity on ore deposits, to delineate surface exposure of ore, mapping structure or complex deposit, analysis of ore quality data, identification of ore targets for drilling and trench targets, exploration planning, geological core sampling, handling and logging, estimation of preliminary in-place resource, modeling of structurally complex coal deposits. Prior experience in field management, and the coal resource evaluation modeling techniques
  • Demonstrable knowledge of computer assisted resource modeling techniques and demonstrate the ability in the use of Minex 3D seam modeling software or comparable software.

Geotechnical Engineer, AB

General Position Description

This position is responsible for providing technical and management expertise in the following areas: design and management of large geotechnical investigation projects, ground improvement techniques, foundation design and specification, materials testing, and construction quality control and monitoring.

The incumbent will be involved in site investigations, including rock and soil logging, soil investigations, natural hazard assessments, mine design, including slope stability evaluations and pit wall design. The primary work will be for mining clients, but work for oil and gas and infrastructure clients is also likely. The candidate will often be working on active mine sites. Opportunities exist to work on a variety of tasks, including project management, analysis and design and report writing.

The incumbent will be responsible for managing surface mining geotechnical engineering projects with a primary project focus on pit slopes, waste dump and tailings embankment stability investigations. While the primary focus will be on mining projects, opportunities exist to work with both the Geological and Water Management Groups within our office.

Essential Job Functions

Support mining and tailings planning, mine operations, tailings operations and construction monitoring teams to optimize designs based on day to day operations and long-term planning requirements.

  • Designing material waste dumps, mine pit walls, foundations, and/or fluid and tailings retaining structures.
  • Providing geotechnical input into short-term construction and planning projects.
  • Conduct geotechnical design, inspection and monitoring of tailings storage facilities.
  • Conducting stability and seepage analyses and preparing detailed engineering drawings.
  • Reviewing various geotechnical instrumentation data to ensure structures and/or pit walls are performing as per design.
  • Conducting geotechnical site investigations and assessments. 

Education and Professional Background

  • Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil or Mining Engineering. Seven years or more of industry or consulting engineering experience. Registered or eligible to register as a professional engineer or geoscientist in the Province of Alberta. Experience in geotechnical investigations, field monitoring, foundations, soil mechanics and slope stability. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to work in a team environment. Excellent computer skills are required including experience with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, Geo-Slope suite of programs and AutoCAD systems. Experience in a consulting engineering environment at a senior project management level is highly desirable. Experience in mining and/or tailings management is highly desirable.

Groundwater Modeler, Denver, CO

Job Duties:

This position will focus mainly on groundwater modeling, but there will be some field work.  The successful candidate will be responsible for developing conceptual and numerical groundwater, chemical, and heat flow models, evaluating geochemical data, and planning and performing hydrologic characterization field work.  Candidates should be prepared to spend an average of 15% of the time in the field, depending on project requirements and field season timing.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop local to regional scale conceptual groundwater models
  • Pre and post-process model inputs and outputs including calibration, sensitivity analysis, and mass balance analysis
  • Statistical analysis of model inputs and outputs
  • Analyze aquifer test data using AQTESOLV or similar software
  • Perform geochemical analyses using PHREEQ or similar software
  • Write reports summarizing project context, field work, data reduction analysis, and interpretation
  • Client and regulatory agency interaction
  • Design and oversee aquifer testing programs
  • Groundwater sampling and characterization

Education and Position Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, civil or geotechnical engineering
  • 0 to 5 years relevant experience
  • Experience doing groundwater modeling, particularly with MODFLOW

The resource reports may be used for public listings on international exchanges such as the ASX, TSX or LSE. All work from field explorations to resource reporting must be to a standard that would pass audits from exploration or mining companies.

Education Required:

Bachelors Degree in Geology. Will accept foreign equivalent degree.

Experience Required:

Six years experience Post University as a Geologist, which must include both exploration and operational experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the work processes involved in coal exploration and evaluation.
  • Demonstrable ability to supervise a project from green-fields exploration to mining operation. Requires up to date knowledge of suitable remote sensing and sampling techniques, geophysics, sample spacing, laboratory procedures, survey systems and methods, equipment selection, environmental management, supervisory skills, budget management, and safety.
  • Prior experience in field management, the latest coal resource evaluation modeling techniques, and English language report writing to international standards.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the guidelines of the SAMREC, JORC and NI-43101 codes.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of computer assisted resource modeling techniques and demonstrate the ability to use the following software packages: MS Word, MS Excel, MS ACCESS, MS PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and Datamine.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the various tools available for effective coal resource modeling and evaluation is essential. This includes washability testing, coal processing methods and product interpretation.
  • Must possess good communicative and reporting writing skills in the English language. The candidate must have a basic knowledge or familiarity with the JORC, SAMREC and NI-43101 guidelines for reporting of resources.
