Controller, Calgary Alberta

Reporting to the Vice President/General Manager with functional reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller’s primary role is to be responsible for all aspects of financial administration of the business, including the financial reporting processes, accounting systems and financial controls. This role is key in working with outside auditors, banks, and multiple Business Unit leaders to provide financial reporting and analysis as well as participate in overall company process improvements.

This position is based out of Calgary, with minimal travel required.

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership

  • Provide guidance to accounting personnel, Business Unit leaders and Vice President/General Manager on all accounting matters including changes to financial systems, record keeping, analysis and reporting
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly consolidated financial statements and other financial reporting
  • Supervise and direct day to day accounting operations which includes accounts receivables and payables, and general accounting
  • Ensure opportunities for training and development of accounting personnel as well as performing annual performance evaluations of direct reports

Planning and Execution

  • Develop and maintain effective control systems, ensuring consistent application of accounting principles and internal procedures
  • Work with all levels of management to ensure consistent application of proper accounting/company policies and internal procedures
  • Liaise with external organizations and officials – banks, government, auditors, lawyers to prepare required paper files and discuss the financial affairs related to the organization and provide recommendations

Business Requirements

  • Interpret financial reports and accounting information to Business Unit leaders, and Senior Management team
  • Work collaboratively with various members of the organization to lead the development and administration of the annual budget process
  • Assist in the development of strategic plans for continuous improvement of operations
  • Ensure all financial reporting of information and results follow accepted accounting principles
  • Oversee all regulatory filings and remittances

Qualifications

  • Chartered Accountant Designation (CA)

Manager, Health Safety and Environment, Calgary Alberta

Reporting to the Managing Director with functional reporting to the Business Unit leaders, the Manager Health, Safety and Environment’s primary role is to ensure Norwest is an industry leader in overall HSE performance. In this role the Manager HSE will lead HSE initiatives and personnel at various locations across North America. This role is responsible for managing and coordinating HSE activities with clients, subcontractors, associates and employees. A priority of this role is to manage HSE risk for the Company’s field projects.

This position is based in Calgary, but does require travel to corporate offices and project sites around the world, with camp accommodations in some locations. The incumbent must be able to work away from Calgary as required.

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership

  • Lead the design, implementation and administration of all HSE initiatives, policies, and procedures to build an organization-wide safety culture and ensure they meet the overall objectives of the company.
  • Work within all levels of the organization to inspire participation in Norwest’s’ HSE programs.
  • Provide support and direction for compliance with safety regulations, emergency response protocols, incident investigations, root cause analysis and corrective actions; including acting as a proactive lead in recommending HSE best practices based on industry trends and client needs.
  • Work with senior management, subcontractors and clients to ensure corporate best practices are implemented and adhered to. This includes, building effective working relationships with all client and sub contractor’s HSE teams.
  • Work with project managers to ensure adequate HSE support is available, and assign appropriate staffing.

Planning and Execution

  • Work with all levels of management to determine HSE requirements; including functional requirements, costs and staffing needs during project planning phases.
  • Develop and manage HSE documentation and records including policies, procedures and work instructions for all field and corporate locations.
  • Work with various members of the organization to develop a HSE strategic plan and annual business plans.
  • Manage the development and implementation of HSE programs, initiatives, systems, and associated procedures for all Business Units.
  • Develop environmental strategies and policies including reference to Corporate and local standards.

Business Requirements

  • Develop and implement HSE performance tracking and reporting systems and metrics.
  • Conduct scheduled HSE inspections and audits at various locations including project sites to ensure compliance with policies and procedures. Participate in annual corporate audits including managing ongoing action items.
  • Ensure all associates and subcontractors have approved HSE plans and programs that meet the requirements of the Company and its clients.
  • Develop and implement HSE programs, ensuring all legislative regulatory requirements are being met and Corporate best practices are being followed.
  • Train all employees, associates and (where applicable) subcontractors on HSE awareness and orientation programs to ensure they are familiar with and trained in Corporate and project HSE policies and procedures as they relate to their specific job and client requirements.
  • Oversee safety training, including conducting specialized safety training and contracting outsourced training providers.
  • Monitor developments, trends and legislation related to industry safety, evaluate the impact on business operations, and lead required changes.
  • Prepare Health and Safety risk assessments and ensure follow up actions are carried through.
  • Serve as senior management liaison with compliance and regulatory agencies.
  • Manage the HSE Corporate budget.

Qualifications

  • Certified Registered Safety Professional
  • Possession of current First Aid/CPR credentials, and site-specific training (H2S, MSHA, CSTS and OSHA) as required

Summary of Experience

  • 10 years HSE related experience within the mining and/or energy industry
  • 5 years of broad, cross discipline management experience

Geotechnical Technician, Calgary AB, Vancouver BC

We are currently seeking a Geotechnical Technician to join our Fort McMurray, AB instrumentation monitoring team and work a fly-in/fly-out two weeks on/two weeks off shift.

Work with a team of geotechnical engineers and geologists to complete operations, maintenance and surveillance monitoring tasks for pit walls, waste dumps and tailings structures at an active mine site in the Alberta oil sands. This position will appeal to candidates with up to four years of related education, training and/or work experience who are looking to grow and develop their skills in a dynamic environment.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Monitor geotechnical instrumentation installed in pit walls, waste dumps and tailings structures at active mine sites

Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Calgary AB

Geotechnical Engineer (Junior/Intermediate), Calgary Alberta

Mining Engineer, Salt Lake City, UT

Job Duties:

This position will report to the Vice President Mining Engineering and have a wide variety of responsibilities including:

  • Developing business with new and existing clients,
  • Managing interdisciplinary projects, and
  • Providing consulting expertise to Norwest’s global client list.

Education Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Mining Engineering or a related engineering degree.

Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 10 years post university experience in the mining industry with an emphasis on underground coal mining and longwall operations.

Special Requirements:

  • Specific mining industry experience in technical and/or management roles.
  • Thorough working knowledge of common and mining-specific computer applications.
  • Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally.

Senior Geologist, Calgary, AB 

Job Duties:

The Senior Geologist will be a key member of our growing geology team.  He/she will take a leadership role in project management and mentoring and developing staff.  Our geological group offers a full range of geological services including planning, managing and executing drilling programs, site data collection and core description, data interpretation and modelling and resource assessments.  Our work has been in many resource based commodities including Coal, Coalbed Methane (CBM), Oil Sands, Conventional Oil and Gas, Oil Shales, Tight Gas Sands, Industrial Materials and Precious Metals.

The successful candidate will work on multiple projects within a multi-disciplinary team that is focused on developing current and future geological projects.  Specific duties and job assignments will include:

  • Provide geological advice and guidance on a variety of geology related projects.
  • Provide technical review, leadership and mentoring of geological staff. 
  • Provide input for areas of future technical development within the department.
  • Oversee project management on geology related projects including, but not limited to, drilling programs, modelling and data management.
  • Provide input on regulatory documents.
  • Ensure mentoring of professional staff in both their technical and professional business development.
  • Project Review. 

Education and Professional Background:

  • Bachelors or masters degree in Geology.
  • Registered as a Professional Geologist in the Province of Alberta.
  • Minimum 10 years progressively responsible experience including experience in oil sands exploration, modelling and reporting. Experience in conventional and non-conventional oil and gas would be an asset.
  • Technical innovation, expertise and leadership along with solid project management and organizational skills are critical for success in this role.

Geologist, Grand Junction, CO

Job Duties:

Multi-commodity geologic resource exploration and evaluation with an emphasis on international and domestic coal projects. Work will entail the design and implementation of geological exploration programs, geotechnical evaluations, development of resource models and compilation of resource reports. Will work with engineers and support staff in U.S., Mongolia and other locations as necessary.

The implementation of exploration programs include the sourcing of appropriate protocols and contractors for exploration permitting, remote sensing, drilling, sampling, assays, washability testing, bulk sampling and surveying. Information received from exploration programs is to be processed and evaluated following selection of suitable resource modeling software. The resource models are to meet or exceed international standards for the reporting of resources and reserves.

Specific duties and job assignments will include consultancy relating to the following:

  • Supervision of coal exploration drilling programs
  • Translation of Geological Reports written in Russian and Mongolian
  • Geologic computer modeling
  • Resource analysis
  • Geotechnical core logging
  • Geotechnical assessment of rock competency relating to mine stability issues
  • Business development activities supporting our current and future work assignments in Mongolia
  • Communicating with Mongolian Engineers and Supporting Personnel located at Field Sites in Mongolia.

Geologic and technical support of our on going exploration assignments in Mongolia and other locations as required.

Education and Position Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in Geology, or related field. Will accept foreign equivalent degree.
  • Three years post university experience as a geologist or related field in coal exploration or mining.

Special Requirements:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the work processes involved in coal exploration and evaluation
  • Demonstrable ability to supervise a project from exploration to mining operation. Requires demonstrable ability to conduct field reconnaissance activity on ore deposits, to delineate surface exposure of ore, mapping structure or complex deposit, analysis of ore quality data, identification of ore targets for drilling and trench targets, exploration planning, geological core sampling, handling and logging, estimation of preliminary in-place resource, modeling of structurally complex coal deposits
  • Prior experience in field management and coal resource evaluation modeling techniques
  • Proven ability to supervise geotechnical data collection programs and property analyses
  • Demonstrable knowledge of computer assisted resource modeling techniques and demonstrate the ability in the use of Minex 3D seam modeling software or comparable software
  • Fluency in written and spoken Mongolian
  • Ability to read and translate Russian mining reports.

Supervision:

Supervised by Norwest Vice President of Geologic Services.

Location of Employment: Grand Junction, Colorado and remote field locations including mining sites within and outside the United States. Candidate must be willing to work in remote field locations for extended periods.

Water Resources/Civil Engineer, Denver, CO

Job Duties:

Currently we have an opportunity in our Denver, Colorado office to work on mining and energy development projects both in the United States and Canada.  The position requires a detail-oriented, self-starting individual capable of working both independently and with interdiscipliary teams on a variety of projects.  Work will consist of diversified activites, including but not limited to hydrologic modeling, design of water and sediment control systems, water treatment systems, piping and pumping systems, construction dewatering, site drainage, surface water and groundwater monitoring and testing, construction supervision and inspections, and site reconnaissance.  Frequent travel to project and client locations will be required which is mostly within Western Canada and the U.S. 

Education and Position Requirements:

  • B.S. or M.S. Degree in Water Resources or Civil Engineering 
  • Intermediate Level:  3 to 5 years relevant experience
  • Previous construction experience with major earthworks or water control structures is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (oral and written) and organizational skills
  • Proficiency working with MS Office Suite, GIS, AutoCAD and Civil 3D, and experience with SEDCAD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS and other surface water and/or groundwater modeling software would be an asset
  • Previous experience in drilling, aquifer testing, or surface water and groundwater sampling is an asset
  • Professional engineering registration or elgibility for professional engineering regustration preferred
  • Travel/field work required 50% of the time
